一、英文中如何正确说“衣服” - Clothes,Clothing, Dress, Suit, Garment,Costume...
那天子莯青青在上班的时候发现一个外国同事穿了一身正装走过来，想寒暄一下，你穿这套衣服真不错，结果脑子里一下跑出来了好多衣服的表达方式，clothes，dress, suit, attire ...到底用哪一下呢？话到嘴边了又被自己咽下去了，最后只硬生生地说了一句“hi...”
相信大家也有过类似的经历，对于一些同义词我们不知道如何区分，有时候用错了会特别尴尬。为了更好地帮助大家区分这些常见的近义词。青青外语会定期分享一些这些常用词的用法区分。
今天就来看一下关于“衣服”的表达方式。
clothes 和 clothing 均可表示“衣服”，用作“衣服”的统称，但在用法上有差别：
1. clothes 是一个没有单数形式的复数名词, 其前不可加不定冠词，也不可加数词，但可用 some, these, those, many, few 等词修饰。如：
如 those clothes / few clothes / many clothes
2. clothing 是不可数名词。如：
they wear very little clothing. 他们衣服穿得很少。
区别：clothes 的含义比较具体，而 clothing 的含义则比较抽象。从语体上看，clothing 比 clothes 更正式。
比较：
i changed my clothes. 我换了衣服。
he is washing his clothes. 他在洗衣服。
our clothing protects us against the cold. 我们的衣服可以御寒。
we are well provided with food and clothing. 我们吃得好，穿得好。
若不考虑其细微区别，两者常可换用(注：一个是复数，一个不可数)。如：
he spent a lot of money on clothes [clothing]. 他花了许多钱买衣服。
dress 表示“衣服”，有两种用法：
1. 用作可数名词，主要指妇女穿的连衣裙或上下连身的女装，也可指小孩穿的衣服，但不指男人穿的衣服。如：
she makes all her own dresses. 她的连衣裙都是自己做的。
she was wearing a beautiful dress. 她当时穿着一身漂亮的衣服。
2. 用作不可数名词，表示“衣服”的总称(不论男女)。如：
he doesn’t care much about dress. 他不太注意衣着。
注：在现代英语中，dress 用作不可数名词的用法已不常见。它主要用来指某些特殊种类的衣服(如礼服等)。如：
evening dress 晚礼服 full dress 大礼服
national dress 民族服装 fancy dress 化装服装
suit 是可数名词，指一套衣服。一套男人的衣服由上衣、背心和裤子组成。一套女子衣服由上衣和裙子组成。business suit
suit 也组成有特殊用途的服装，如：a bathing suit 游泳衣，a sports suit 运动服，a space suit 宇航服，a diving suit 潜水服。
costume多用来指戏装，或某种场合穿的全套服装，也可指某一历史时期或某一国家,某一时代或某一团体的特别clothing。
例如：my cousin went to the party in a pirate costume（我表弟穿海盗装去参加那舞会）
elizabethan costume（伊丽莎白时代的服装）;cowboy costume（牛仔服装）
garment即是一件clothing，特别指穿在外面的clothing，如she pulled the garment on and zipped it up.她穿上衣服并拉好拉链。
garment更多的是商业用语，用于服装的生产和销售。例如：the garment industry 制衣业，garment design。在美国，如果说服装厂，一定是用garment factory, 决不会说clothes factory.
apparel和attire主要用于穿在外面的全副高雅clothing，但这种意思多已被dress所取代。apparel（通常可以写作wearing apparel）是clothing和clothes的较正式用字。与attire比较，它偏于指某人身上所穿的全部garments；而attire则往往偏于指某人的clothes给人的印象。
例如 dress in formal attire to show your professional attitude towards the interview ;the strange attire of the eccentric old woman（那古怪老妇的奇装异服）.
attire多见于墙上的标语会有"proper attair is a must"，“proper/formal/casual attire”。
gear和togs均指clothes，但语气比较随便得多。togs是各很旧式的字，现在如使用起来，也差不多总是指泳装。即使用于泳装，togs也大半为gear所代替；而后者除指一般clothing之外，也有特定的用法。例如：modern gear does not suit stout or older men（现代衣着不适合粗壮或年老的人穿）; riding gear（骑马装）.
garb是各书卷气颇重的字，主要用于指某职业或地位的典型clothing。例如：the garb of a priest（牧师的装束）;kingly garb（帝王的服饰）
对于上述的各种衣服表达方式，我们不需要每一条都记得非常清楚，只需要记住那些在特定场合下最常用的表达方式就可以了，
1. clothes 和 clothing是口语中最常用的，clothes 的含义比较具体，而 clothing 的含义则比较抽象；
2. 出席晚会穿的礼服，用dress, evening dress 晚礼服
3. 套装用suit, business suit 职业套装
4. 演出服装用 costume
5. 服装的生产和销售用 garment
6. 盛装刻意着装用attire
